More than 53,000 people fled Port-au-Prince in three weeks during March as gangs unleashed a wave of violence in Haiti’s capital, the UN said on Tuesday.
Tens of thousands fled the city between March 8 and 27, as gangs expanded their presence with a series of attacks on government infrastructure and neighbourhoods that led embassies to evacuate staff.
The scale of abuses, which include rapes, killings and kidnappings, is “unprecedented in modern Haitian history”, UN rights chief Volker Türk said on Tuesday.
Amid the chaos, acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced on March 12 that he would resign upon the formation of a presidential transition council made up of politicians, civil society and the church.
